Gant was established in 1949 in New Haven, America by Bernard Gantmacher, a Ukranian immigrant. His focus was solely on high quality shirts and as his sons joined the business too, it went from strength to strength. In the 1950's there was an explosion of colour that is still fundamental in Gant collections today. Their shirts were smart but casual and appealed to the preppy middle/upper classes of Ivy League America. By the end of the 1960's Gant started to broaden it's range of clothing and in 1971 launched their first American sportswear collection including rugby shirts, ties and trousers.
