O&C Butcher takes on the Aldeburgh Triathlon
The official name of the Aldeburgh Triathlon is the Aldeburgh FUN Relay Triathlon and our two teams definitely had fun on Sunday. So much so that we’re already looking forward to next year.
This was the events 4th year and we’ve always been proud to support it but this year it was great to take part as well. We entered a men’s and ladies team made up of staff and friends of the shop.
On arrival at the Moot Hall we were greeted with very challenging sea conditions and all swimmers were given the option not to swim if they did not feel experienced enough to take on the North Sea in that state. Safety was at the forefront of the event with a very strong presence from the RNLI who officially gave the all clear just before 12pm. Our swimmers Clare Traxler and Matt Naunton bravely took on the waves and did really well. Matt works in our men’s department and just so happens to be a swimming coach as well, handy!
Our men’s cyclist had to drop out the week before the race so luckily Gavin Battle from Purely Pesto stepped in at the last minute despite claiming not to be a cyclist at all – thanks Gav! Luckily he’s almost as good at riding a bike as he is at making pesto.
Jude Marvel did a great ride for the ladies team and handed over the baton (ankle strap actually) to Sarah Stacey who is blaming the strong southerly breeze for her rather slow time (she told us to write that!). James Stacey meanwhile had a great run home in 25 minutes.
Both teams loved the event much more than they thought they would and there was instant discussion about training harder next year (or in Matt’s case doing any training at all).
The atmosphere was great on the sea front. The sun shone and yes the wind blew but we were all in the same windy boat and the competition from where we stood was all very friendly.
So a huge thank you to Matt Dye, Tony Pick, Rob Mabey, Andrew Pipe and all the team at the Aldeburgh FUN Relay Triathlon for bringing such a great event to our town.
